The Firex 428 smoke alarm is no longer available from Firex and no direct equivalent is now made. The Firex 428 had the unique chracteristic of a 120v interconnect wire. The interconnect wire allows communication with the other alarms and triggers all of the alarms if one alarm goes off. All alarms that are currently made with an interconnect wire has a voltage of 9v.
What does this mean for you?
You cannot directly connect a new alarm to your system. Doing so will burn out the new alarm almost immediately. If you have a Firex 428 or any of the equivalents above, we have three solutions to your problem:
- Solution one
-
Replace all of your Firex 428 alarms in your house with Model KA4618 to get these benefits:
- You retain an interconnected system.
- Your new alarms will all be current with a 5 year warranty and 10 year life-span.
- This solution will require use of the new wiring harness provided with the alarm and replacement of the existing wiring harness.
- Solution two
-
Install a battery operated stand alone alarm Model Number KA0914.
- All remaining Firex 428 will still be interconnected while the new alarm will be a stand alone unit.
- Solution three
-
Install Model KA4618 and cap off the orange interconnect wire with a wire nut when installing the new wiring harness.

- All remaining Firex 428 will still be interconnected while the new alarm will be a stand alone unit.
- Be sure to turn the power off at the breaker box before cutting the wire on the 428 to avoid a short or getting shocked.
